Over the past few months, Graham and I have had the privilege of helping his father, Windsor artist Gene Lotz, prepare for something that has been decades in the making.

This June, Gene will present Resurrection at SHO Art Studios in Windsor, Ontario. The exhibition explores landscapes, storms, faith, family, and transformation through a collection of powerful works inspired by the natural beauty of Windsor-Essex County and the shores of Lake Erie.

I’ll never forget the day I found Gene’s paintings tucked away in the garage.

I was going through things with my husband when we came across these bold, colourful pieces, and I remember thinking, how are these just sitting here? They were stunning. Full of movement, emotion, and so much life.

Gene Lotz has always had art in him. He studied art in Windsor and later at Western, learning from some incredible Canadian artists, but life eventually pulled him in a different direction. Like so many people, he built a career, raised a family, and put that part of himself aside for a while. But his creativity never really left.

His new collection, Resurrection, feels like a powerful return to that passion. The work is striking, colourful, and emotional. It speaks to people in that quiet but unforgettable way that good art does.

To me, this collection feels like proof that it’s never too late to come back to what you love.

Resurrection

Resurrection is more than a collection of paintings; it is a narrative of transformation and renewal. His work explores several interconnected themes that resonate deeply with Windsor Essex County arts enthusiasts.

Gene’s work often captures the raw power and unpredictability of nature, especially through storms, landscapes, and the changing shores of Lake Erie. His paintings highlight the beauty and complexity of the Windsor region, with Lake Erie appearing often as a symbol of change, memory, and the passage of time.

Gene’s words capture the essence of his work: “During a thunderstorm, the most powerful element is a lightning strike.” This quote reflects the sudden bursts of inspiration and energy that characterize his artistic revival.

Walkerville itself is a destination for those looking for things to do in Windsor Ontario this summer.
